Kwame Brathwaite, the pioneering activist and photographer synonymous with the aesthetics of the “Black is Beautiful” movement, sadly passed away on April 1 at the age of 85. His work has garnered resurgent interest from curators, historians, and collectors, with his first major retrospective organized by the Aperture Foundation debuting in 2019.
Born in 1938, Brathwaite’s journey as a photographer started with inspirations from moments like seeing a photograph of Emmett Till and encountering a young man in a jazz club taking photos without flash. His unique photographic style, utilizing a medium-format camera and enhancing Black skin portrayal in photography, captured jazz legends like Miles Davis and John Coltrane in the 1950s and ’60s.
Aside from his contributions to photography, Brathwaite co-founded the African Jazz Arts Society and Studios, pushing back against Eurocentric beauty ideals by celebrating Black women through the Grandassa Models. His legacy includes documenting icons like Nina Simone, Stevie Wonder, and Bob Marley.
Continuing his photography journey through the lens of “Black is Beautiful,” Brathwaite’s work remained relevant until his recent passing. Although his health prevented an interview for T Magazine’s 2021 profile, exhibitions like “Kwame Brathwaite: Things Well Worth Waiting For” at the Art Institute of Chicago honor his impactful legacy.
