Reimagined by photographer Graeme Green, the “New Big Five” photography project reshapes the narrative of wildlife. Instead of referring to the challenging animals to hunt, this new concept focuses on the five animals most people want to photograph or see in the wild. The winners – elephant, polar bear, lion, gorilla, and tiger – were selected by 50,000 global voters in 2021.
“The New Big 5” photography book, released this week, showcases stunning images of these animals and other endangered wildlife. Renowned photographers like Ami Vitale, Steve McCurry, and Paul Nicklen contributed to the book, along with essays from conservationists like Jane Goodall and Paula Kahumbu.
Green emphasizes that the book serves as a call to action on conservation issues affecting wildlife, such as habitat loss, poaching, pollution, and climate change. He aims to encourage people to appreciate wildlife through the lens of a camera rather than a gun.
Featuring the work of 144 wildlife photographers worldwide, the book took nearly two years to curate. Green believes these images represent the beauty and creativity that highlight the urgency of protecting endangered species.
As the UN reports a rapid decline in nature, with millions of species facing extinction, the “New Big 5” animals serve as ambassadors for global conservation efforts. Highlighted in the book are the benefits of rewilding and the role of indigenous communities in preserving biodiversity.
Jane Goodall, who wrote the afterword for the book, stresses the need for immediate action to heal the natural world. She hopes the captivating photos will inspire people to engage in wildlife conservation for the benefit of future generations.
