The University of Connecticut secured its fifth men’s basketball national title with an impressive 76-59 victory over San Diego State University at NRG Stadium in Houston. Senior guard Tristen Newton shined with 19 points and 10 rebounds, while Final Four Most Outstanding Player Adama Sanogo, a junior forward, contributed 17 points and 10 rebounds for UConn (31-8).

UConn head coach Dan Hurley expressed, “We knew we were the best team in the tournament going in and we just had to play to our level.” San Diego State (32-7) was led by Keshad Johnson with 14 points.

Despite an early setback, UConn dominated the game especially during an 11-minute, eight-second period when San Diego State struggled to score, letting the Huskies take the lead from 10-6 to 36-24 at halftime. Although San Diego State attempted a comeback in the second half, the Huskies pulled away, eventually securing the victory.

UConn’s victory marks them as just the sixth team to achieve five NCAA men’s basketball championships, placing them alongside prestigious names like UCLA, Kentucky, North Carolina, Duke, and Indiana. UConn’s women’s teams have also clinched 11 basketball national titles.

With each tournament game won by at least 10 points, UConn’s dominance was unquestionable throughout the competition. The team’s strong leadership and remarkable performance on the court have solidified their place in basketball history and have established them as a force to be reckoned with in the world of college basketball.

Congratulations to UConn, the outstanding champions of the 2022 men’s basketball national title!
